When a mushroom at the base means the tree is failing

A hard, shelf-like conk fused to the trunk or bulging out of the root flare is not just a curiosity. It is the fruiting body of a fungus that has already been eating the wood inside, and by the time you can see it, the decay is usually well underway.

What it is

The conk is the symptom, not the disease

A conk, or bracket, is the fruiting body of a wood decay fungus, the part that makes and releases spores. The fungus itself lives inside the tree, quietly digesting the wood. A tree does not put up a conk until that decay is established, which is why a fresh bracket at the base is a signal to take seriously rather than scrape off.

On this red oak the large, weeping, cream-to-tan mass at the root flare is most consistent with the weeping conk, Inonotus dryadeus (now often listed as Pseudoinonotus dryadeus). It is a white-rot fungus of the roots and butt of oaks. Young brackets ooze amber droplets, then age to the hard, cracked brown you see lower down the same trunk.

A red oak the owner wanted to save

Why people wait too long

A full green canopy is not proof of a sound tree

This is the trap. The weeping conk rots the roots and lower trunk, the part you cannot see, while the crown above can stay green and full for a season or more. So the tree looks alive and worth saving right up until the base can no longer hold it. When a tree with this kind of basal decay fails, it often fails at the ground in a storm, whole tree over, not one branch down. That is why the leaves are the last thing I judge it by.

Not every mushroom near a tree is a crisis

Where the fungus is growing matters more than that it is there. The short version: fungi on the living trunk and root flare are the ones that worry me, fungi in the bed usually are not.

Take it seriously

Conks fused to the trunk or root flare

  • Hard, shelf-like brackets attached to living wood, not sitting loose in the mulch
  • At the base, root flare, or on the lower trunk, where structural strength lives
  • Often with sloughing bark, cavities, or soft, punky wood nearby
  • Means decay in the roots and butt, and a real question about how the tree still stands
Usually harmless

Mushrooms in the mulch or lawn

  • Soft mushrooms that pop up after rain and collapse in a few days
  • Growing in mulch, bed soil, or turf, not attached to the trunk
  • Mostly saprophytes breaking down dead roots, mulch, and old stumps
  • A sign of a living, active soil more than a threat to the tree

What to do about it

You cannot treat the decay, but you can measure the risk

There is no fungicide that regrows rotten wood. The job is to find out how much sound wood is left, keep people and property out from under the risk, and make an honest call on the tree.

What helps

  • Get a tree risk assessment, a qualified arborist can gauge the sound wood left with mallet sounding, a resistograph, or sonic tomography
  • Look below grade, a root-crown excavation shows how far the decay runs into the structural roots
  • Move the target, shift what parks, plays, or sits under a tree with basal decay while the risk is judged
  • Remove it when the wall is thin, when too little sound wood remains for the load, removal is the honest answer, not a treatment
  • Protect your healthy trees, keep mowers and string trimmers off the flare, avoid grade changes and trenching over roots, keep trees vigorous

What does not

  • Painting, spraying, or injecting the conk. No fungicide cures established root or butt rot
  • Knocking the bracket off. It is only the fruiting body, the decay stays in the wood
  • Trusting the green leaves. The weeping conk rots the base, so a full canopy can sit on top of a failing tree
  • Topping the tree. Cutting the crown back does not restore anchorage and only adds stress
