Bacterial leaf scorch, the slow burn in your oak
A patch of the crown that browns at the leaf edges in late summer, comes back a little worse every year, and never quite responds to watering: that is the signature of bacterial leaf scorch, a bacterium that lives in the wood and slowly plugs the tree's water lines from the inside.
What it is
A clogged water system, not a dry spell
Bacterial leaf scorch is caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium that lives in the xylem, the wood that carries water from the roots up to the leaves. It builds a sticky film inside those vessels and slowly plugs them, so the canopy runs short of water and the leaves dry and brown at the margins, even when the soil is plenty moist.
It is carried tree to tree by xylem-feeding insects, leafhoppers, sharpshooters, and spittlebugs, and once in a while through grafted roots between neighbors. There is no spray that reaches it and no cure. Many infected oaks decline gradually over several years as more of the water system is choked off.
What it attacks
The trees most at risk here
Plenty of hardwoods can carry it, but in Central Texas a handful of species show up again and again.
Oaks, red oaks first
The red oak group takes the hardest hit, and these are the ones I see scorch most often in local yards. Live oak can carry it too, usually with milder, slower symptoms.
Other common shade-tree hosts
It is not just an oak problem. The same bacterium scorches several other trees you see all over Central Texas, and cedar elm in particular is a frequent local host.
Tell them apart
Scorch or just thirsty
From the curb they look the same, brown-edged leaves on a stressed tree. The pattern on the leaf, and how the tree behaves over time, give it away. If a deep soak greens it back up, you were most likely looking at plain heat and drought stress.
Browns from the edge, every year
- Often a yellow or reddish halo band between the dead margin and the green center
- The browned edge is irregular and jagged, not a clean even line
- Hits the older leaves first, often one branch or one sector before the rest
- Shows in mid to late summer and comes back a little worse each year
Browns evenly, recovers with water
- Margins brown in a smooth, even band with no yellow halo
- Often shows on the youngest tip leaves first
- Tends to hit the whole tree at once, not one branch
- Perks back up after deep watering and good rain
The look-alike that is far worse: oak wilt
Bacterial leaf scorch is slow. Oak wilt is fast, and it can kill a red oak in a single season and run through a whole stand of connected oaks. Early on, a thinning, browning canopy can look like either one, so this is not a guess to make from a photo. If your oak is declining, the safe move is to have a qualified arborist rule out oak wilt and confirm the cause with a lab test before anyone prunes, treats, or removes the tree. Getting this one wrong is expensive in both directions.
How to manage it
You cannot cure it, but you can buy years
There is no fix that clears the bacterium. The goal is to keep the tree vigorous, manage the risk, and stretch its useful life while you plan ahead.
What helps
- Confirm it first, a lab test (ELISA or PCR, through the Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab) tells scorch from oak wilt
- Take the stress off, deep water in drought, mulch no more than three inches deep and off the trunk, relieve compaction
- Protect the root zone, no trenching, paving, or fill over the roots
- Prune out dead and hazardous limbs, and on high-value trees consider annual oxytetracycline injections to suppress symptoms
- Replant smart, diversify and lean on more resistant white-oak-group species over time
What does not
- Waiting for a cure. There is not one, and the bacterium stays for the life of the tree
- Counting on injections to heal it. They only suppress symptoms for a season and must be repeated yearly by a licensed applicator
- A heavy bag of nitrogen. Pushing growth on a water-starved tree does not help and can hurt
- Assuming removal stops it. Taking out one tree does not clear the bacterium from the area
