Brown Along the Veins, Not Frost
When a sycamore or oak leafs out brown and blotchy after a cool, wet spring, the usual cause is anthracnose, a fungal leaf blight, not a late frost and not oak wilt. The tell is that the browning follows the leaf veins. Here is how to read it, and why it is rarely the emergency it looks like.

What's going on
A wet-spring leaf blight
Anthracnose is not one disease but a group of closely related fungi, each keyed to its own host: sycamore, oak, ash, dogwood, maple and more. They share one trigger, cool and wet weather while the new leaves are pushing out in spring. On sycamore the fungus is Apiognomonia veneta, whose spore stage is often called Discula platani.
The fungus follows the leaf's plumbing, so the dead brown tissue develops along and outward from the veins rather than creeping in from the edge. That one detail is the whole diagnosis. It separates anthracnose from the margin-in browning of drought scorch, and from the uniform blackening of a late frost.
Most important: on a healthy tree this is a cosmetic disease, not a killer. A tree that drops its first flush of leaves to anthracnose simply grows a second flush once the weather warms and dries.

The same story across every host: brown necrosis tracking the veins and bleeding into the blade. Once you have seen it, you cannot unsee it.



How it unfolds
Four phases over the season
On sycamore especially, anthracnose moves through recognizable stages from bud break into summer.
Bud and shoot blight
The fungus kills emerging buds and young shoots, so the tree leafs out late, sparse, or uneven. Often mistaken for winter dieback or a tree that "didn't make it through the freeze."
Twig blight and cankers
The fungus colonizes last season's twigs, forming sunken cankers and killing tips. These cankers are where it overwinters and the engine that drives the disease year to year.
Leaf blight
Irregular brown lesions develop along the major veins and spread outward, sometimes killing the whole leaf. Heavy infection drives premature leaf drop in late spring.
Witches' broom
Repeated twig dieback over several seasons forces clustered shoots from one point, producing the gnarled, broomed branch habit of a long-infected tree.

Tell it apart
Anthracnose, frost, oak wilt, or drought
Four things get blamed for brown spring leaves. They read very differently once you know where to look.

The one that matters most is oak wilt. It is a serious, reportable disease that spreads through connected root systems, and it does not get better on its own the way anthracnose does. If a live oak is declining and you are not certain, treat it as a possible oak wilt case and have it looked at on site rather than written off as leaf blight. More on that on the oak wilt page.
What to do
Manage it without overreacting
For the great majority of yard trees, anthracnose needs no chemical at all. Sanitation, sound pruning, and vigor do the work, then warm weather ends the outbreak.
Do
- Rake and destroy fallen leaves in autumn and again in spring, to remove the spore reservoir on the ground.
- Prune out cankered and dead twigs in the dormant season, which removes the on-tree reservoir and opens the canopy so it dries faster.
- Keep the tree vigorous with deep, infrequent watering through summer and a ring of mulch, because a strong tree shrugs off defoliation a stressed one cannot.
- On a high-value, repeatedly hit tree, consider a protective fungicide timed at bud break, before infection.
Never
- Spray after the leaves are already blighted. Fungicides are protective only. Once the damage is there, a spray does nothing.
- Assume a declining live oak is "just anthracnose." Rule out oak wilt on site first.
- Panic and remove a tree that is going to re-leaf on its own in a few weeks.
- Compost or chip the infected leaves on site, which just keeps the spore supply in the yard.
Solve it at the nursery, not the spray rig
American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) is the host that struggles most here, and it also fights our heat and alkaline soils. If you are choosing a new shade tree, that single decision is where anthracnose is actually solved.
For Central Texas I steer clients to Mexican sycamore (Platanus mexicana), which shrugs off foliar disease and takes our heat, drought, and caliche far better, or to a resistant London plane cultivar. Pick the right tree and the problem never starts.
